Join us for an evening of three French choral masterpieces. Poulenc's sparkling Gloria pairs with Fauré's ever-popular Requiem and his early, luminous Cantique de Jean Racine.

Conducted by John Hobbs with organist Stephen Tyrrell, and featuring soloists Lisa Moffat (soprano), Rebecca Squire (contralto), Ben Hoadley (tenor) and Matthew Jeffries (bass).

The Programme

• Francis Poulenc: Gloria
  Contrast the tranquil introspection of Fauré with the vivid, cinematic brilliance of Poulenc’s Gloria. Written for chorus, soprano soloist, and orchestra, this work is a thrilling mix of mischievous rhythm, operatic drama, and breathtakingly lush, sacred lyricism. It is a brilliant explosion of musical colour and joy.

• Gabriel Fauré: Cantique de Jean Racine
  Begin the journey with Fauré’s elegantly tender early masterpiece. Written when the composer was just 19, this piece wraps the listener in a warm, flowing blanket of harmonies and exquisite melodies that perfectly capture a sense of quiet devotion.

• Gabriel Fauré: Requiem
  Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful choral works ever written, Fauré’s Requiem offers a uniquely comforting vision of the afterlife. Moving away from the dark, dramatic terrors of traditional requiems, Fauré delivers a deeply moving, peaceful lullaby for the soul, culminating in the sublime, angelic beauty of In Paradisum.
